Progress in Data Mining ? Report about the Industrial Conference on Data Mining, ICDM 2010

(pressrelations) -
The 10th Industrial Conference on Data Mining ICDM 2010 held in July in Berlin showed once more that the event is a must for all data miners from research and industry alike who like to stay informed about hot new topics in data mining. This year, papers on 10 general topics in data mining established at this conference over the years were presented. In addition to theoretical aspects of data mining, topics such as multimedia data mining, data mining in marketing, data mining in industrial processes, data mining in medicine and bioinformatics, data mining in finance, webmining and data mining for network performance monitoring were presented. One new general topic, data mining on agriculture, has been established and attracted a lot of participants who presented their work. The topic "aspects of data mining" covered work on data mining in different fields that we expect to form new general topics at the Industrial Conference on Data Mining over the next years.

Participants from 27 different countries participated in the conference and presented their work. The presented papers and talks were of high scientifi quality and participants enjoyed a lifely discussion at the conference. Hundred sixty nine papers were submitted to the conference and of those a total of fourty nine papers were selected for long paper presentation. This translates into an acceptance rate of 29%.

In addition to the main conference, an industry paper session and a poster session were held where work in progress and problems regarding real-life applications were presented.

Two tutorials were give before the conference: the Tutorial Data Minnig and the Tutorial Case-Based Reasoning.

Four workshops were held after the conference and researchers and practitioners from 12 countries participated. These workshops are Data Mining in LifeScience DMLS, Data Mining in Marketing DMM, Data Mining in Agriculture DMA and Case-Based Reasoning on Multimedia Data CBR-MD.

Before the conference four papers were nominated for Best Paper Award. The final decision was made based on the presentation and the discussion. The Paper 'Combining business process and data discovery techniques for analyzing and improving integrated care pathways' presented by
Jonas Poelmans, Guido Dedene, Gerda Verheyden, Herman Van der Mussele, Stijn Viaene and Edward Peters was award Best Paper Award at ICDM2011. Congratulations to the winners.

The next conference will be held in 2011 in New York (www.data-mining-forum.de). under the auspices of the World Congress Frontiers on Intelligent Data Analysis DSA 2011 (www.worldcongressdsa.com).

We would like to invite you to contribute to this conference. Please come and join us.

Sincerely yours,
Prof. Dr. Petra Perner
