A battery-backed solar power system will be installed at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST)

Within the Renewable Energy Solutions Programme by the Deutsche Energie-Agentur (dena) – the German Energy Agency, deea solutions and Terrawatt are building a battery-backed photovoltaic (PV) power plant for demand-driven solar power supply in Namibia.

(IINews) - Frankfurt am Main, September 16, 2016: In October 2016, a battery-backed solar PV power plant will be installed and commissioned on the roof of the guest house “Kleines Heim” of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Windhoek. In addition to the design and installation of the system, the companies deea solutions and Terrawatt will conduct workshops and trainings on solar power with local personnel.
Currently, the system components such as solar panels, inverters, batteries, substructures and installation materials are being shipped to the project site.
The 15 kWp solar power system is backed by a 16.8 kWh battery bank. All products used in the projects are sourced from German manufacturers only.
The polycrystalline PV modules are provided by the Freiburg-based manufacturer SI Module, whereas the inverters are supplied by Kaco New Energy from Neckarsulm. Hoppecke lead-acid batteries are used for energy storage.
In late September, an installation team led by Frank Polzin will travel to Windhoek to install, test and commission the solar system. Later on, experts of deea solutions and Terrawatt will travel to Windhoek to deliver workshops and trainings on demand-driven solar power solutions. Amongst others, the project aims to collect important information on power outages in the region in order to provide tailored solar system solutions in Namibia and neighboring Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries.

The dena RES Project Namibia is part of the worldwide dena Renewable Energy Solutions Programme coordinated by Deutsche Energie-Agentur (dena) - the German Energy Agency - and co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) within the German Energy Solutions Initiative.
